Drentsche Patrijshond
About the Breed
Breed HistoryDrentsche Patrishonden--or 'Drents' for short--hail from the Netherlands, with origins in the 17th century. The English translation of Drentsche Patrijshond is 'Partridge-dog of Drenthe'. Drenthe is a quiet, farming community. It should come as no surprise then that Drents are the quintessential farm dog, with traditional duties that included watchdog, bird dog, and family companion. Nowadays, this versatile breed can be found throughout Europe and North America, hunting game birds in the field or sleeping at the foot of a child's bed.

Field UseDrents are versatile all-rounders in the field. Their natural range is closer than many of their gun dog cousins. While each Drent is unique in its hunting style, upland bird hunters can expect cooperation, adaptability to diverse terrain, frequent contact, and an intense desire to please. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to hunt behind a Drent is likely to remember the first time they watched this dog gracefully quartering through the field, pointing instinctively upon bird contact, and happily fetching a downed bird to hand.

General AppearanceDrents have a lean, muscular, athletic build. Their coats are primarily white with varied degrees of brown markings in the form of larger plates or smaller spikkels. Hair is short to medium length with generous feathering on legs, ears and chest, and a bushy tail. Their eyes are amber in color, and should augment their natural good-natured expression. Their ears are set high, especially when they are alert. A Drent with sound conformation is a strikingly handsome dog.

PersonalityAs puppies, Drents are playful, social, and energetic, with the occasional streak of stubbornness and mischief. As they mature into adulthood, with proper socialization and gentle but persistent training, these dogs can become ideal companions with unmatched loyalty, cooperation, and desire to please. Drents have an innate sense of humor and playfulness. They also seem to know instinctively when it is time to work. Our Drents perform at the highest levels in hunting, tracking, obedience and, of course, lots of cuddling.
